The 12 Apostles in the Port Campbell National Park
is without a doubt the most well known natural attraction in Victoria.
These awesome, limestone rock formations have been carved by mother
nature over countless centuries. For locals & tourists alike they
hold a magical fascination as colours change throughout the day. The
twelve apostles offers one of the most spectacular viewing platforms
for sunsets. From light pastels to blood red the sunsets can be unbelievably
dramatic. Just before dark keep an eye out on the beach for local fairy
penguins returning to their burrows after a day's fishing. |

Literally millions of photos are taken
of the twelve apostles but very few of the equally spectacular scene
in the other direction. This photo was taken from the 12 apostles towards
Gibsons Steps Beach. These limestone rock stacks are probably feeling
a liitle left out. |

Loch Ard Gorge is about 10 minutes east of Port
Campbell. It takes its name from the unfortunate 80 metre iron clipper
The Loch Ard which came to grief here in 1878; most of its crew &
passengers drowning with the exception of 17 year old Tom Pierce, an
apprentice crewman and Eva Carmichael, a passenger & only 19 years
old. Loch Ard Gorge is simply stunning: on a calm day it is so peaceful
& the swimming is great. On wild & woolly days with a big swell
running, the waves try to force their way through the narrow entrance
to the gorge in dramatic fashion. A must see. |

The Grotto is one of the jewells of
the Shipwreck Coast. Unfortunately, not a lot of tourists get to see
it as it is just west of Port Campbell. The attractions of the Shipwreck
Coast do not limit themselves to the 12 apostles alone. There literally
are countless fascinating coastal formations and the grotto is one of
them |

One of the beaches on the shipwreck coast where
you will almost always be guaranteed to have to yourself is Wreck Beach
at Moonlight Head. Make the effort, turn off at Moonlight Head 16 kilometres
west of Lavers Hill, walk down the 366 steps and venture into an environment
you will not soon forget. Above are the anchors from the shipwrecks
Fiji & Marie Gabrielle. |

London Bridge in between Port Campbell
& Peterborough is one of the major attractions of the Shipwreck
Coast despite one of its arches collapsing in 1990 leaving a couple
stranded on the wrong side & awaiting rescue by helicopter. A platform
has now been erected offering excellent views of the bridge & of
London Bridge beach. |
London Bridge Beach: anyone for abseiling?
This is an incredibly beautiful beach which is never disturbed by human
footprints although the tangled web of footprints in the sands tell
tales of the comings & goings of a small fairy penguin colony. |

The Arch. What more can you say? Just another one
of the incredible rock formations which dot the coastline of the shipwreck
coast. |
The Bay of Martyrs according to some
locals rivals the 12 Apostles. You certainly couldn't complain about
walking along a beach like this. Perfectly safe for swimming & with
no one as far as the eye can see. The Bay of Martyrs is just on the
outskirts of Peterborough; a delightfully small, seaside village. |

| The Bay of Islands. Once you slip over the Curdies River in Peterborough you really do enter another world. No sooner have you got in your car after looking at the sheer majesty of the Bay of Martyrs than you come across the Bay of Islands. Does it ever stop? | |
